LONG-LASTING SACRIFICIAL ANODE AND EMBEDMENT METHOD IN REPAIR MORTAR Unmet Need: Longer enhanced service life of discrete sacrificial anode Discrete sacrificial anode (DSA) is a tool used for corrosion mitigation of steel reinforcement in chloride contaminated concrete. Recent studies reveal that the commercial DSA products have shorter service life than expected, as the zinc corrosion products accumulate at the interface between zinc core and the packaged mortar, reducing the current supply to the steel reinforcement thereby cracking the encased mortar and finally leading to the complete failure of the DSA. The Technology: Encasing materials for discrete sacrificial anode WSU researchers have designed a long-lasting DSA with prolonged service life and to further reduce the costs associated with the need for frequent replacements. A variety of conductive and porous foamed pastes are designed as encasing materials for DSA products, which also provide acceptable strength and maintain sufficient humidity. The porosity of the encasing paste is designed deliberately to be porous enough to accommodate the corrosion products. Applications: Manufacturing of discrete sacrificial anodes. Additive to manufacturing of reinforced concrete structures. Advantages: Effective corrosion mitigation of steel reinforcement bars. Enhanced performance of DSAs throughout the life-cycle. Extended service life of the DSAs. Patent Information: Provisional patent application has been filed.
