Method to determine infection level in Psyllids
Unmet Need: Permanent and effective cure for citrus greening disease.
A great variety of plant pathogens are transmitted by insect vectors. Psyllids are one of the most harmful pests due to their rapid reproduction and variety of hosts. Asian Citrus Psyllids (ACP) and potato psyllids are the carrier for causative agent of greening disease - Ca. L asiaticus (C.L a). There is a need to properly understand the interaction between bacteria and pathogens to find an effective cure for the disease.
The Technology: Determining the infection level in psyllids
Researchers at WSU have identified strategies to determine infection level in psyllids. Currently, only molecular biology techniques are used to detect C.L a infection, which are time consuming and expensive. Researchers have developed an alternative method to detect infection status in ACPs using dissolved oxygen microelectrodes and measure the pH and oxygen profiles inside ACP abdomens.
