Wide Area Grid Fault Detection using PMU Data Abstract:Real time power grid monitoring and fault detection, recognizing single-line-to-ground (SLG), line-to-line (LL), and three-phase faults using Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data. Provides intelligent fault diagnosis, detection and characterization, facilitating smart grid development. Current practice of electric utilities depends on alarms of relays and circuit breakers at control centers. Reliance on traditional grid management practices is not optimal as grids continue to become more complex and interconnected. As a data-driven approach, this method completely relies on measured PMU data to determine fault type and location, and does not require knowledge of the system’s model and topology. Applications and Advantages:• Take advantage of synchrophasor data to detect faults over wide area power networks.• Better insight and analysis of network performance, does not require knowledge of grid model or topology.• Lower resource requirements than current market alternatives.
