A Method For Assessing Neurodevelopmental Abnormalities

Unmet Need: Technology to assist in clinical screening of neurodevelopmental abnormalities.

There has been research to support clinical screening of neurodevelopmental disorders particularly ASD. The current technologies capture pupils, but does little to guide the user towards capturing the measurement in children. Also, it does not provide a comparative measure for interpretation in relation to developmental of the pupillary light reflex response/visual pathway over time.

The Technology: Using pupillary light reflex measure to detect neurodevelopmental abnormalities.

Proposed technology measures the pupillary light reflex (PLR) in developing children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It includes a mechanism to train health care providers to assess the PLR using software technology which can assist in the collection of the measurements, guide the procedures for obtaining and interpreting the PLR measure and store the data for transmission via electronic portal.

Applications:

  • Detection of autism spectrum disorder.
  • Detection and testing of other neurodevelopmental abnormalities.

Advantages:

  • Helps in early detection of ASD in developing children.
  • Potential to change healthcare practices in relation to screening of ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
